As of this year, Google's own Gemini app can connect directly to your Google Business Profile and draft a reply to a review for you, something ChatGPT and Claude have never been able to do natively. That single fact changes a question a lot of owners are already asking: if Google is building this in for free, why would anyone pay for a dedicated review-reply tool? The honest answer needs the actual details, not the headline.
The quick answer
For years, the honest answer to "can AI reply to my Google reviews" was yes, but only through an outside tool or a general chatbot with no real connection to your profile. That changed on June 10, 2026, when Google announced a direct link between the Gemini app and Google Business Profile: connect the two once, and you can ask Gemini in plain language for help with a specific review, and it drafts something that references what the customer actually wrote. Google's own announcement describes it as an assistant that knows your business, with access to your real reviews, questions, and performance data instead of guessing.
The practical difference from ChatGPT is real. This integration isn't asking you to describe a review in a chat window and paste the result back by hand, it's reading the review that's actually sitting on your profile and, once you approve the wording, posting the reply there too. Whether that's reason enough to skip a dedicated tool depends on the details below, not on the headline.
What Google actually rolled out, and when
This isn't one feature, it's a sequence of them, and it's easy to mix them up.
- March 20, 2026: Google began testing a separate, narrower feature: a "suggested reply" button built directly into the Business Profile review dashboard. That's a different feature from the one this article covers; see our breakdown in Google's new AI review reply feature.
- June 10, 2026: Google announced a direct connection between the standalone Gemini app and Google Business Profile, letting you manage your profile, including drafting replies, through natural-language chat. Rolling out globally, excluding the EEA and UK.
- August 7, 2026: trade coverage, citing Google's Small Business newsletter, reported the integration expanding to some accounts managing more than one profile. Google's own support documentation still describes the original single-profile limit at the time of writing, so treat the wider rollout as in progress rather than universal.
What Gemini can actually do today
Once connected, the Gemini app can take real action on your Business Profile instead of just describing what you could do yourself:
- Draft a reply to a specific review, referencing what the customer actually wrote, when you ask for one
- Delete a reply you've already posted, if you ask it to
- Edit business hours, contact information, and action links, and update attributes like outdoor seating or wifi
- Create, schedule, publish, or delete Update, Offer, and Event posts
- Pull up performance metrics: search impressions, direction requests, call data, and search keywords
One wording detail is worth noticing. Google's own documentation describes Gemini as able to "draft or delete" a reply, but it uses the word "publish" for marketing Posts specifically, not for review replies. That's a small clue to a bigger point covered next: even inside Google's own tool, a reply to a live review doesn't get the same hands-off treatment as a promotional post.
The catch: every reply still needs your sign-off
Independent reporting on the rollout is direct about this: Search Engine Journal notes that "AI-drafted review responses still represent your business once published, so each one needs a read before it goes out." There's no toggle to let Gemini post replies without you looking at them first, not even for the safest, simplest five-star thank-you.
“Even the company building the AI won't let it post a reply to a live review without a human reading it first.”
That's a reasonable design choice, and it lines up with what we've argued in are AI review responses a good idea: a specific, accurate reply is fine coming from a machine, but nothing should go out under your name without some kind of check. The difference is where that check happens. Gemini currently applies it to every single reply, with no way to let the routine ones through faster while you focus on the ones that actually need judgment.
- Read every AI-drafted reply before you approve it, no matter how routine the review looks
- Treat a Gemini connection as a useful bonus, not a full replacement for checking your profile
- Expect to ask about one review at a time, and repeat that for each new one
- Assume a review reply will ever post itself without you asking and approving it
- Expect it to draft anything automatically the moment a new review lands
- Give it access from a shared Workspace login expecting the same feature set
Who can't use it yet
The rollout comes with real edges, and they line up with exactly who tends to have the most reviews to answer:
- Personal Google accounts only, not Workspace, which shuts out most agencies and shared team logins
- One verified Business Profile at launch; a partial expansion to multi-profile accounts was reported in August 2026, but isn't confirmed as universal yet
- Not available in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom
- A limited set of supported languages
- No automatic drafting: you have to open the app and ask about a specific review, one at a time, there's no queue
Gemini vs. ChatGPT vs. a dedicated tool
ChatGPT or Claude: no native connection to your Business Profile at all. You paste the review in yourself, copy the draft back out, and post it by hand every time; no memory of your last fifty replies unless you re-paste your own history. Our full breakdown is in can ChatGPT reply to your Google reviews.
Gemini, connected to your profile: a genuine step up from that. It reads the actual review, and once you approve the wording, it can post the reply without you leaving the chat. The gap is volume, not honesty: you still have to remember to open the app and ask about each review individually, there's no queue of what's waiting, and no rule for which ones are safe to move quickly on versus which ones deserve a longer look.
A dedicated tool: drafts the moment a review lands instead of waiting to be asked, keeps your voice consistent across every reply instead of starting from a blank chat each time, and separates the routine reviews (handled automatically) from the sensitive ones (held for a one-tap OK) instead of applying the same manual check to all of them. That's the automate-the-easy, hold-the-risky model covered in full in our Google review automation guide.
So, do you still need a dedicated tool?
If you run one Business Profile, use a personal Google account, get a handful of reviews a month, and don't mind opening an app and asking about each one, Gemini is a genuinely useful new option, arguably the best free way to get an on-profile-aware draft today, and a real improvement over a bare ChatGPT prompt.
If you manage more than one location, work through an agency or a shared team account, or get enough reviews that "open the app and ask" turns into another daily chore, the gap Gemini leaves open is the same one dedicated tools were built to close: nothing drafts on its own the moment a review posts, nothing auto-publishes the safe replies while holding the risky ones for you, and there's no single place managing more than one profile's voice.
