At peak happiness: right after the meal, the handover, the checkout, or the compliment. Same day beats next day, and within the hour beats both. The further the experience fades, the lower the response rate.
SMS or email: which gets more reviews?
SMS usually wins for speed (most texts are read within minutes) while email wins when you want to say more. If you can only pick one, text with a direct review link is the highest-converting ask for most local businesses.
Is it against Google's rules to ask for reviews?
Asking is fine and Google encourages it. What violates policy is paying or offering discounts for reviews, and review gating: only asking customers you know are happy. Ask everyone the same way.
